ARMADALE RAIL LINE — SHUTDOWN
1432. Hon TJORN SIBMA to the minister representing the
Minister for Transport:
I
note the impending and unprecedentedly lengthy shutdown of the Armadale line
next week after the Coldplay concert.
(1) What is the
revised full cost of the Armadale line works including all the expenses
associated with the provision of alternative public transport options, and how
does this differ from published figures?
(2) Will the
minister table the list of alternative options, along with associated costs and
project scheduling time frames, that she considered prior to deciding upon this
shutdown option?
(3) What
consequences will there be on the Public Transport Authority or the contractors
engaged in these works if the shutdown extends beyond the 18 months guaranteed
by the minister?

I provide this answer on behalf of
the Minister for Transport and thank the member for providing some notice.
(1)–(3) The Armadale line shutdown will facilitate the
biggest transformation of the Armadale line in its 130-year history. Seven new stations will be built; 13 level
crossings will be removed; the line will be extended to Byford, the
Thornlie–Cockburn Link will be connected to the network; and six
hectares of new public open space will be created. A number of options were
considered, but it was determined that an 18-month shutdown would be the
safest, fastest, most cost-effective and least-disruptive option. The minister
is confident the required works will be undertaken within the shutdown period.
