BHP
BILLITON — WORSLEY ALUMINA AND NICKEL WEST
214. Mr W.J. JOHNSTON to the
Minister for State Development:
I have a supplementary question. What assurance can the
minister give about ongoing employment for the workers at Nickel West?

AnswerView source ↗

This may surprise the member
opposite but the industry is a private sector industry. The government is not
the employer. Obviously, if there is a change of ownership, there will be some
discussion about that between BHP Billiton and the government. They are covered
under state agreements. There will be a reassignment of workers if that change
of ownership occurs. The government is not in a position to talk about whether
or not it will be sold; we do not know. Indeed, we do not know who the
prospective buyer would be if it were put on the market.
