ABORIGINAL ART FRAUD - POLICE REPORT
(1) Will the minister table a copy of the Western Australia Police major fraud squad investigation into Aboriginal art fraud in the Kimberley, conducted, in part, by Detective Sergeant Mark Kusevich; and, if not, why not? (2) What action are the police taking, given the significant issues raised in the police inquiry? (3) What is the current status of inquiries into Aboriginal art fraud in the Kimberley? (4) Have the police sought comment from officers of the Art Gallery of Western Australia on the authenticity of paintings by Aboriginal artists purchased by or on loan to the Art Gallery; and, if not, why not? The Minister for Police and Emergency Services has supplied the following answer - (1)-(2) The Western Australia Police major fraud squad investigation into Aboriginal art fraud in the Kimberley was referred to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in June 2005, as a result of an order obtained under the Trade Practices Act 1974, and remains in their possession. (3) Currently no inquiries are being conducted by WA Police. (4) No, as other art did not form part of the police investigation, and there was no link between the art under investigation and the Art Gallery.
