FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES — FIRE CREW
PROTECTION
324. Hon AMBER-JADE SANDERSON to the
Attorney General representing the Minister for Emergency Services:
I refer to the 2012 commitment to a range
of fire crew protections being fitted to firefighting appliances.
(1) Have GPS location devices been
fitted on all appliances?
(2) If yes to (1), on how many
appliances has that equipment been fitted?
(3) If no to (1) —
(a) why not; and
(b) when will this measure be finally
implemented?

AnswerView source ↗

On behalf of the Minister for
Emergency Services, I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) No.
(2) Not applicable.
(3) (a) The
installation of a GPS location device as part of an automatic vehicle locating
system is a complex initiative. GPS/AVL software is required to be integrated
into these comprehensive crew protection systems and existing Department of
Fire and Emergency Services systems must also be modified to work with this new
system. Due to this complexity, a number of technical options remain to be
analysed and risk assessed prior to going to market.
(b) It is
expected that the specifications will be completed by June 2016. In this
context, following procurement processes, a contract will be awarded with
implementation expected to commence in May 2017. This component will be
integrated with other crew protection components.
