These are all part of the Department's New Living strategy to reduce its presence in public housing estates, and to improve the quality of retained housing. It should be noted that in many New Living projects, it is necessary to empty an entire complex of apartments and townhouses, prior to refurbishment work commencing. As a result, a number of dwellings will remain vacant while the Department negotiates to relocate the remaining tenants. In the New North project, 63 of the vacant properties as shown above, were part of a total of 8 complexes. Queens Park and Southwell are subject to similar difficulties where the majority of properties are duplexes, or part of a townhouse complex and the Department works actively with remaining tenants to relocate them quickly to enable refurbishment or demolition work to commence. The total number of vacancies in Coolbellup includes 30 units in one apartment complex undergoing a major refurbishment. 2) North Metropolitan Region (Mirrabooka) 180 South Metropolitan Region (Fremantle) 123 South East Metropolitan Region (Cannington) 216 Southern Region (Albany) 77 Southwest Region (Bunbury) 105 Central Region (Kalgoorlie) 76 Midwest-Gascoyne Region (Geraldton) 50 Pilbara Region (Hedland) 22 Kimberley Region (Broome) 9 Wheatbelt Region (Northam) 48
