FISHERIES ADJUSTMENT SCHEME COMMITTEE - WETLINE READJUSTMENT
I refer to the minister’s decisions on the outcomes of the wetline review that were tabled in the house on Tuesday, 29 May. (1) How will the fisheries adjustment scheme committee be established for the wetline readjustment? (2) Who will make up that committee? (3) How will members of that committee be elected? (4) What will be the terms of reference? Hon JON FORD

I thank Hon Bruce Donaldson for the question. I have an answer that just might fit. (1) A committee of management will be established under the Fisheries Adjustment Schemes Act 1987 to advise me on the desirability of a voluntary fisheries adjustment scheme for those fishermen affected by my recent decisions on the wetline review. If the committee recommends a scheme and I accept its advice, I will establish a scheme under the act and the committee will continue to operate to provide advice on the administration of the scheme and on the offers received. (2) I have not yet determined who will make up the committee. It will have to include people who have knowledge about commercial fishing and wetline issues, while not being directly involved in the relevant fisheries. I will probably consider appointing an independent chair who has knowledge about adjustment processes. (3) My usual practice is to canvass widely for nominees for such committees. If Hon Bruce Donaldson or any other member of this house would like to provide nominations, I would welcome their suggestions. (4) I have not determined the terms of reference at this time. However, they will need to be broad enough to cover the wide range of circumstances regarding this very complex fishery.
