(1) I refer to the Government’s decision to re-route the Southern suburbs railway through South Perth-Como and Salter Point and ask is it correct that, up to the time that the Premier defended this decision in Parliament in the sitting week commencing 31 July, he had believed there would be benefits for the people of South Perth-Como, and Salter Point?
(2) Is it correct that he believed then that those suburbs would in fact be serviced by the new railway by designated railway stations?
(3) Does the Premier acknowledge that the new plan does not envisage the train actually stopping in South Perth-Como?
(4) In these circumstances, how does he suggest the new rail will benefit the people of South Perth-Como?

(2) & (3) The locations of stations will be examined during the planning process and determined when the Government considers the new Master Plan for the direct route. (4) The projected extra patronage from the direct route is 5000 extra trips per weekday. This will ultimately result in a reduction of cars passing through South Perth / Como on the Kwinana Freeway and relieve pressure on our road system. The detailed benefits of the direct route will be outlined in the new Master Plan due to be completed in February 2002.
