Workplace fatality—North Rankin complex
10. Hon Tim Clifford to
the minister representing the Minister for Mines and Petroleum:
We are approaching
the 1,000-day anniversary of the death of Michael Jurman on Woodside's North
Rankin gas complex, 135 kilometres offshore from Dampier. The National Offshore
Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) works in
conjunction with state and federal resources ministers as the joint authority to
regulate offshore safety in Commonwealth waters.
(1) Does the minister think it is acceptable that,
after 1,000 days, there is still no report into the death of Michael Jurman?
(2) Can the minister assure the Legislative Council
that he will pursue the matter with NOPSEMA and any other relevant state or
federal bodies?
The President: I
cannot be sure, honourable member, but I think the first part asks for an
opinion. I will ask the minister to answer as best he can.

Thank you, President.
I do thank the member for some notice of the question. The President quite
rightly anticipated the answer. The Minister for Mines and Petroleum has
provided the following.
(1) I refer to Legislative Council standing order
105(1)(b), which stipulates that a question does not seek an opinion.
(2) This part of the question should be directed
to the Minister for Industrial Relations.
