Youth crime—Kununurra—Ministerial visits
630. Mr Adam Hort to
the Premier:
I refer to the
alarming youth crime crisis in Kununurra. Has the Premier or any of his
ministers visited Kununurra since youth crime exploded in October, and, if not,
why not?

Mr Speaker,
obviously, I have a parliamentary secretary who actually represents the area,
and from that perspective the government is deeply engaged in Kununurra. The
government is well and truly represented not only in the Parliament but in the
community.
I want to commend
our hardworking police officers who acted swiftly to bring the situation under
control. They are continuing to catch the offenders quickly and to keep the
community safe. Operation Regional Shield, which our government created in 2019,
means that regional WA will continue to see increased resources in the busier
summer months ahead. Additional Regional Shield resources were deployed to Kununurra
to combat the recent issues, and this included specialist officers targeting
drug distribution and liquor offences. Since its inception, there have been
more than 2,268 Regional Shield staff deployed across Western Australia,
including 833 officers in the last financial year. Mr Speaker, we are
continuing to respond to all community safety issues—not just in Kununurra
but right across the state.
