SOUTHERN RAIL LINK, COST
Will the Premier provide the House with a detailed cost breakdown of Labor’s direct route, totalling no more than $1.2 billion? Dr GALLOP

The Minister for Planning and Infrastructure has spoken about this matter in the media on frequent occasions. The Government has described in its press releases how it will meet those costs. We have a master plan for the best route from Mandurah to Perth that is overwhelmingly supported by the people of Western Australia. That master plan deals with all the engineering issues. We will go out to tender. I repeat that the Government has received the best advice available. It is the same advice that delivered us the railway to the northern suburbs. Many members are new to the Parliament. When the Minister for Transport in the Labor Government in the early 1990s announced the Government’s plan to build a railway to the northern suburbs, members on the other side of the House at that time - the Liberal and National Parties - said it could not be done. Not only was it done, but also it is the pride of Western Australia today. Government members: Hear, hear!
