HOMELESSNESS STRATEGY
997. Mr A. KRSTICEVIC to the Minister for Community
Services:
I have a supplementary question.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Mr D.J. Kelly interjected.
The SPEAKER : Minister for
Water, I call you to order for the first time.
Mr A. KRSTICEVIC : Why will
the government wait until its entire term of government is almost complete
before it will even contemplate providing additional funding to address the
homelessness crisis? Is it because the minister and her government just do not
care?
Several members interjected.

One of the main drivers of
homelessness amongst women is family and domestic violence. Let us look at the
record of this government compared with the previous two governments and what
they achieved in combating family and domestic violence. We went to the last
election promising a suite of commitments and $21 million of new funding. Two
and a half years later, we have committed $53 million in new funding and we are
working our way through meeting those election commitments as well as the
strategy work to prioritise the remaining work. It will take some time to make
inroads into the high levels of domestic violence. The member for Carine may
not understand this, if his past actions are
anything to go by, but if a government wants effective social policy, it has to
take the time to consult with the sector, examine the evidence and work its way
through it to make sure that it puts real change in place to address this very
difficult issue. This is an issue that bedevils modern economies across the country—across
the globe. That is what we want to do. We have a responsibility to spend
taxpayers' money effectively and we have a responsibility to those
vulnerable people to give them our best efforts. That is exactly what we are
doing.
The SPEAKER : That is the end
