QuestionView source ↗

I refer to the Whitby Falls Hostel and ask - (1) How many residents - (a) are currently living at the hostel; and (b) have been moved out in the past six months? (2) Will the minister confirm media reports that the new cluster homes will be built for residents at the Whitby Falls site? (3) Will the minister allow Channel Seven's Today Tonight program to interview on-site those residents or guardians who have consented to an interview? (4) Is the minister aware that one family was refused permission to view a potential hostel prior to placing a relative? (5) How does this constitute proper consultation and a cooperative approach to relocating residents? Hon PETER FOSS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) (a) Twenty residents are living at Whitby Falls Hostel; (b) seven residents have been discharged from Whitby Falls since 15 February 2000. Other residents have had temporary and weekend leave, but have not been discharged. No resident has been “moved out” of Whitby Hostel. Residents have elected to move of their own accord. (2) The minister is awaiting advice on the location of proposed accommodation for residents. (3) Where guardian provisions are in place, the appointed guardian will need to agree to the resident being interviewed. Where no guardians are in place, residents can make such decisions themselves. The professionals caring for the residents would provide advice based on the clinical best interest of the residents. If this were to occur it would need to take place at a location other than Whitby Hostel, as a number of residents and families have indicated they will regard the presence of the media as an intrusion on their privacy. (4) No parents have been refused permission to view a potential hostel prior to placing their relative. (5) Not applicable.
