(1) The Government is assessing a range of assistance options for the people of Hopetoun and Ravensthorpe as a result of the closure of the BHP Billiton mine. Road improvements, including the potential construction of a new road linking Bremer Bay and Hopetoun are part of the current considerations.
(2) The Government is considering a range of assistance options. Main Roads WA and the Department of Environment and Conservation are providing input into the road options.
(3) If the proposal to construct a new sealed road from Bremer Bay to Hopetoun is to proceed, and subject to the normal statutory clearance processes, works could be undertaken in a number of stages. The initial stages of construction could commence in 2009/10.
(4) The completion timeframe would be determined by a number of factors including total funding commitment and annual cash flow, design constraints and environmental clearance processes.
(5) The estimated cost of the entire project is subject to a number of variables including geotechnical and environmental assessment, alignment selection and design standards. The estimate is subject to the further assessment of these variables.
(6) The existing proposal for the route linking Bremer Bay and Hopetoun includes the reconstruction of existing local roads including Swamp Road, Doubtful Islands Road, Murray Road, and Pabelup Drive in the west and Hamersley Drive in the east. The proposed alignment through the Fitzgerald River National Park follows the existing Telegraph Track route.
