Question regarding the Premier's commitment to regional development, specifically concerning mining royalties and a regional development subcommittee meeting in the North West, potentially coinciding with the Pilbara-Kimberley regional council meeting. The Premier commits to touring the regions but doesn't guarantee specific timing or location.

CABINET REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT SUBCOMMITTEE
My question is to the Premier in his capacity as the chair of the cabinet regional development subcommittee. I know the Premier is aware of the strong case that has been put forward that a greater share of the mining and petroleum royalties be returned to the regions from which they are generated. (1) Will the Premier hold a meeting of his regional development subcommittee in the north west of Western Australia? (2) Will the Premier organise such a meeting to be held in conjunction with the next Pilbara-Kimberley regional council meeting, which, incidentally, is scheduled to be held on 13 and 14 April next year? (3) At such a meeting, will the Premier ensure that the Government will provide a detailed response to the royalty question? (4) If the answer to any of the first three parts of this question is no, will the Premier provide an explanation for his negative response? Dr GALLOP

(1)-(4) I have already provided a detailed response to what the member for Pilbara calls “the royalty question”. The previous Opposition - now the Government - made it clear that it would set up a regional investment fund. That fund has been set up, and the Government intends to make sure the funds are invested in regional Western Australia so that real infrastructure for new jobs in regional Western Australia is created. I have already answered that question. Labor answered that question during the election campaign. It won the election, and it is proceeding to implement that policy. The member for Pilbara knows only too well that the Government has done that. I am pleased that the member for Pilbara asked the question about the cabinet regional development subcommittee, because a meeting of that committee this morning determined that we would take that committee into regional Western Australia next year. Mr Omodei: You have to start doing something. Dr GALLOP: Regional cabinet meetings have started. They have gone down very well. We are moving around the State. We have planned our regional cabinet meetings for next year. We will also take the cabinet regional subcommittee into the regions next year. I cannot guarantee that we will be at the particular place at the particular time that the member for Pilbara requests, but the regional subcommittee will certainly tour the regions next year as part of its normal work to take up issues and to make sure that it is in touch with what needs to be done for the regions.
