HALLS CREEK — LIQUOR BAN
I refer to the 11 May decision by the Director of Liquor Licensing to ban the sale of full and mid-strength takeaway liquor in Halls Creek from 18 May 2009 and the subsequent 12 May media statement by the minister. (1) Has a date been proposed for ending the prohibition on the sale of full and mid-strength takeaway liquor in Halls Creek; and, if so, what is that end date? (2) If not, what reasons can the minister provide for not setting an end date? (3) What steps does the minister propose to provide for the sale of full and mid-strength takeaway liquor in Halls Creek to tourists and those members of the community who are not the targets of this prohibition? Hon NORMAN MOORE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(2) The condition has been imposed indefinitely; however, the effectiveness of the condition will be assessed as soon as practicable after 12 months. This will include assessing relevant data provided by the Executive Director of Public Health and Western Australia Police. (3) The Minister for Racing and Gaming has no legislative authority to intervene in any matter that is the responsibility of the licensing authority under the Liquor Control Act 1988.
