PERTH CITY LINK — AVANI HOTEL
259. Mrs G.J. GODFREY to the Minister for
Planning:
I understand that on the weekend the
Minister for Planning made an announcement about a new hotel at the Perth City
Link. Can the minister advise the house how this development will add to the
transformation of Perth and provide an update on the progress of the project?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for Belmont for
the question. The Perth City Link project, Elizabeth Quay and other projects
are very important not only in transforming Perth and revitalising the city,
but also of course in economic development terms. I was very pleased to be
involved in the announcement on Sunday of the successful proponent for the
development and operation of a hotel in the City Link project area, which, in
fact, will be very close to Perth Arena at the western end of the City Link
project. Of course, this will provide opportunities for visitors to and
performers at the Perth Arena as well as being very important in its own right.
The successful group is the Minor
International group—a Bangkok publicly-listed company and a substantial
hotel and food and beverage operator on a worldwide basis. The particular hotel
brand that the group will establish in a 250-room, four and a half star hotel,
is the upmarket AVANI brand. The Minor International group will also develop in
a separate but adjacent building 200 one and two-bedroom serviced apartments,
and at the ground level there will be substantial activation—cafes,
bars and alfresco dining, and a public plaza. There will also be a rooftop bar
in the development, which will be very welcome for that precinct. The Minor
International group was selected following a competitive expression of interest
process. There was substantial interest, and that expresses confidence in Perth
and Western Australia, in the economy here and in future growth that people
expect in relation to visitation and also from local residents.
This particular hotel project is
important to job creation. We expect it will create about 900 jobs in
construction and also in the operation of the hotel, and it will attract about
$110 million in investment in construction in Perth. All these sorts of
projects are very important, particularly in our current financial
circumstances. The catalyst that the Perth City Link, Elizabeth Quay and other
projects is providing is attracting private sector investment and development,
and that is really important. I welcome that the Minor International group has
expressed its confidence in Perth and will be going ahead with the new hotel
and adjacent serviced apartment building.
