Considerable notice was given of this question. I understand that the answer might therefore have changed. The Seventh Avenue Bridge in Maylands bears a notice stating “Seventh Avenue Bridge emergency repairs required due to damage to underside of bridge by overheight vehicles. Bridge closed until further notice.” (1) On what dates was the bridge damaged by an overheight vehicle or vehicles? (2) Are emergency repairs intended to be carried out? (3) What emergency repairs are required? (4) What stage have those emergency repairs reached, and in particular - (a) is any design work required; (b) has any design work been done and, if so, when; (c) have any contract documents been drawn up and, if so, what and when; (d) have any tender documents been issued and, if so, what and when; (e) have any tenders been let and, if so, when and to whom; (f) has any remedial work been undertaken and, if so, what and when; (g) has any allocation of funds for the work been made and, if so, how much? (5) By what date is it hoped that the bridge will be re-opened for traffic? (6) Are any other works or investigations being carried out in connection with the passage of traffic over the railway line in that area and, if so, what? Hon KEN TRAVERS

I thank the member for some notice of this question. As an aside before I give the answer provided by the minister, I can remember that this bridge was constantly closed during my childhood. I thought it was going to be pulled down. Recently it has been open a lot more often than when I was in my youth. The minister has provided the following response - (1) The bridge was initially hit on 19 November 2004 by an overheight vehicle. Repairs related to this event were completed in early January 2005. However, the bridge was again damaged by another vehicle before it was re-opened to the public. Buses used to have a sign reminding them not to drive under the bridge. (2) Yes, major repairs are required and are being arranged. (3) The major repairs involved the replacement of the two bridge spans over Railway Parade and Whatley Crescent. (4) (a)-(e) The design of the replacement spans is almost complete. As the member noted, this answer was current at 29 March. It is anticipated that tenders for the works will be called by mid-April. (f) Major repairs as outlined above are required. (g) The major repairs will be funded by the Main Roads Western Australia program. The cost will be dependent on the tenders received for the works. (5) It is anticipated that the major repairs will be completed by late July 2005. (6) No.

Hon KEN TRAVERS replied: I thank the member for some notice of this question.
