MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES — PILBARA
971. Hon STEPHEN DAWSON to the minister
representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to the answer to question
without notice 924 asked two days ago about mental health services in the
Pilbara, and ask for each of Newman, Hedland and Karratha Hospitals —
(1) How many patients were assisted
by the mental health unit in 2015–16?
(2) How many patients were referred
for acute inpatient care in Broome or Perth in 2015–16?
(3) Do visiting
mental health professionals provide services to Paraburdoo and Tom Price
Hospitals; and, if so, what services and how often?

I thank the member for some notice
of the question.
(1) WA Country
Health Service, Pilbara, does not have an authorised mental health inpatient
unit. WACHS's Pilbara Mental Health and Drug Service provides
community-based mental health services for people diagnosed with persistent and
enduring mental illness, and those people at risk of harm to self and others. For
2015–16, the occasions of services provided by the PMHDS—noting
an individual patient may have multiple occasions—was Newman, 4 659;
Hedland Health Campus, 10 828; and Nickol Bay Hospital, Karratha, 7 390.
(2) For the
financial year commencing 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2016, the following number of
patients were transferred to the Mabu Liyan acute psychiatric unit in Broome
from Hedland Health Campus, 12 patients; Nickol Bay Hospital, nine patients;
and Newman Hospital, four patients. For the financial year commencing 1 July
2015 to 30 June 2016, the following number of patients were transferred to
mental health inpatient beds in Perth: from Hedland Health Campus, five
patients; Nickol Bay Hospital, seven patients; and Newman Hospital, one
patient.
(3) The Pilbara
Mental Health and Drug Service provides community-based mental health services
via telehealth and visiting services to the communities of Tom Price and
Paraburdoo. Tom Price receives visits six days a month from the Newman PMHDS
and Paraburdoo receives visits as required from the Newman PMHDS, due to its
close proximity to Tom Price—less than an hour's travel by car—and
smaller population.
