I refer to assaults on hospital staff at the Peel Health Campus since 1 January 2017 and ask: (a) How many hospital staff have been assaulted and what is the occupation of each staff member; (b) How many hospital staff received medical attention after being assaulted by patients; (c) What was the nature of each incident; and (d) How many hospital staff members were threatened with assault?

The Department of Health advises:
(a) From 1 January to 27 June there were a total of 11 staff who were assaulted by patients.
These were five security officers, two doctors, three registered nurses and one orderly.
(b) Eight staff members required medical assessment following an assault by a patient.
(c) Two staff members required blood testing following an exposure to patients’ body fluids (they were spat on by patients) and six staff members required assessments and treatments for soft tissue injuries after they were hit by patients.
(d) The specific number of hospital members that were threatened with assault is not known without significant resource and time to extract the information.
