the minister representing the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the NorthLink project.
(1) Has Main Roads, or its contractors, received any
claims for compensation as a result of damage to vehicles in relation to
the NorthLink project?
(2) If yes to (1), how many claims for compensation
have been received, and what was the reason for each claim?
(3) Have any
claims been settled; and, if yes, how many claims have been settled, what is
the total value of payments made, and for what reason was each claim settled?

I thank the Leader of the
Opposition for some notice of the question. The following answer has been
provided to me by the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(3) Following
the opening of Tonkin Highway, road users have reported minor damage to their
vehicles from loose stones on the new highway. Main Roads has received
approximately 238 vehicle damage claims or potential claims compared with an
estimated 150 000 vehicle trips over the last 20 days. Main Roads advises that
a similar situation occurred following the opening of the Toodyay Road project.
As
of 12 May 2020, 26 claims have been approved for settlement, with a total value
of $26 332. Claims have been settled on the basis of damage that may
have occurred as a result of loose stones on the road surface.
