The Government revealed earlier this year a far-reaching strategy to put Western Australians at the leading edge of the digital age. The strategy aims to ensure that our schools are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and that students, teachers, parents and households have access to, and are trained in the use of, technology. Government and private sector services will be brought online in a user-friendly way, delivering benefits to the community through a coordinated approach to information provision and service delivery. The four phases of the strategy are, first, technology in schools and teacher training; second, educating parents and other groups to utilise the technology; third, connecting homes to the Internet and providing tuition; and, fourth, providing government and private sector services online. On 25 October 2000, the Deputy Premier launched the communities online program which promotes further development of online communities. As part of the program, a number of publications have been produced. These are the “Get Online WA” and the “Online WA Champions Kit”. The Office of Information and Communications in the Department of Commerce and Trade produces the booklets as part of the State Government’s strategy to ensure Western Australians learn about the online environment and gain maximum benefits from these services.
