I refer to social workers and case loads, and ask -
(1) What training is a newly appointed social worker or Graduate Welfare Officer given when they start work with the Department?
(2) How long after they start with the Department are they allocated case loads or cases?
(3) Before a social worker is given a new case, do they get any briefing on that case?
(4) If so, what does the briefing consist of?
(5) Does the Department have any in house training on child abuse and what to look for?
(6) If yes, for how long does this training go for and what does it consist of?

The first of these eight week courses is planned to follow the pool recruitment process that is underway. Staff who have been employed prior to the pool process are provided with a three week training course that covers the core casework modules from Start Up that new staff require to handle cases, these are Child Protection, Care for Children and Capacity Building. These courses ran in May and June 2005 with a further course scheduled for October 2005. 2. Team leaders decide when new workers are allocated cases. 3. Yes. 4. It consists of information regarding the key issues in the case situation for the child and the child's family and any other relevant information that pertains to the particular case situation. 5. The Department currently offers the following training: Critical Decision Making in Child Protection, Child Safety and Assessment Framework Training, Specialist Child Interviewing Training, Legal Issues in Child Protection, Child Protection Training for Community Child Protection Workers and Community Development Training for Child Protection Workers. 6. Critical Decision Making in Child Protection - 2 days, Child Safety and Assessment Framework Training - 2 days, Specialist Child Interviewing Training - 10 days, Legal Issues in Child Protection - 1 day, Child Protection Training for Community Child Protection Workers - 5 days and Community Development Training for Child Protection Workers - 3 days.
