PORT HEDLAND LAND RELEASE PROGRAM
Can the minister advise the house of the latest developments in the state government’s land release program in Port Hedland? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN

I thank the member for the question, and for his incredible work in advancing the interests of the town of Port Hedland. I compliment the member, and also the local government in Port Hedland. The local government in Port Hedland is an exceptionally good mob, and its chief executive officer, mayor and councillors are working very constructively with government. We have had a lot of problems in Port Hedland, particularly with turtles and storm surge and those sorts of environmental constraints. However, we are making some progress. We have just received final subdivisional approval for stage 2 of the Pretty Pool development. That is a wonderful development. I am sure you will be very envious, Mr Speaker, of this wonderful estate, which will be under construction by the end of this month. The development comprises 76 single lots, and two group dwelling sites. All up, there will be 150 dwellings on that site. We will be going to public ballot for the single lots by the end of August. We are also allocating vital housing to government agencies and key employees in the private sector. We are pleased to say that we have also lodged applications for the next stage of Pretty Pool—the third stage—and that is proceeding well. I know that my very good friend the Minister for the Environment will be very helpful to us in ensuring that comes to fruition. He is a very good minister. Mr T. Buswell : He was not your very good friend in Belmont! Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : We got a very good outcome in Belmont, believe me. The Pretty Pool development stage 2 is going ahead. Stage 3 is looking highly prospective. Over and above that, we are also developing a 60-lot medium-density site, and we have now gone out to the market for a builder. This site will combine both retail and commercial spaces. We are trying to provide a diversity of housing types in Port Hedland. People from a broad demographic range want to live in these fabulous Pilbara towns. Therefore, we need to be able to provide a diversity of product to suit those varied demographics. There has been a high level of interest in this project. That tender will close mid next month, and the tender will be awarded by late August. We have also gone out with a very creative proposal for 120 hectares of unused land in the Cooke Point area of Port Hedland. There has been some interest from the private sector in doing some canal development on that site. However, there will be a few environment obstacles to overcome if that development is to go ahead. Dr S.C. Thomas : Get your good friend the Minister for the Environment to help! Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : I am sure the Minister for the Environment will help! We have sought expressions of interest from the private sector to determine who might be interested in developing that. I acknowledge the very good work done by Housing and Works in South Hedland. Housing and Works was able to recently release 114 lots in the South Hedland area, which sold for very modest prices, and, indeed, many first home buyers were able to acquire those lots. There are challenges in the Pilbara towns but we are getting on with the job of releasing land.
