It is proposed to establish a Department of State known as the Department of Regional Development and Local Government. The new department is a consolidation of the roles of the current Department of Local Government with the regional functions currently undertaken by the Department of Commerce and Trade. The new department is expected: To better support the needs and aspirations of regional communities. To facilitate closer coordination of regional development initiatives with the Local Government network across the State. To forge a stronger bridge and synergy between the two functions. To provide better support and assistance to the Regional Development Commissions. To strengthen the role of Local Government in supporting and influencing regional development.
