(1) A total of $200m has been committed to this project and to the recently completed upgrading works on Great Northern Highway at Pinga Street and Wallwork Road, by the Federal and State Governments.
During the 2007 Federal election, the Rudd Government committed $160m towards the delivery of a $200m upgrade of Port Hedland roads vital to industry. The State is committed to financing the balance of the $200m upgrade ($40m) of Great Northern Highway.
The proposed works include realigning Great Northern Highway from Wilson Street, around the northern side of Wedgefield and back to the existing highway west of Hamilton Road and grade separation of the Port Hedland Goldsworthy Railway. The exact type of bridging of the rail is not know at this time and requires further discussion with the mining companies involved.
The realignment is expected to cost in the order of $188m in outturn dollars and construction is expected to commence in 2010/11. $12m has already been spent on the recently completed upgrading of Great Northern Highway at Pinga Street and Wallwork Road.
