HEMPCRETE —
METRONET
247. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the minister representing the
Minister for Transport:
I refer the minister to the ongoing
installation of concrete sleepers and concrete noise barriers across the
Metronet network, and to a number of recent
studies which show that hemp blocks have excellent sound dampening properties ,
well in excess of those associated with run-of-the-mill concrete.
(1) Were hempcrete blocks considered at any stage in
the tendering process for either sleepers or noise barriers?
(2) Was any work
done to establish how much more effective hempcrete might be in dampening noise
in a rail environment?
(3) If yes to
(2), will the minister share the results of that work; and, if no to either
(1), (2) or (3), why not?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by
the Minister for Transport.
(1)–(3) Project
teams did not come across hempcrete when exploring alternatives.
However, the member has now raised it
with the minister, so who knows what might happen in the future.
