I have a supplementary question. In view of the fact that Victoria and New South Wales have not only met with Dexta but also arranged for reinsurance, will the minister explain how he accounts for his admission not two minutes ago that he has not even met with Dexta while builders in WA cannot get insurance? Mr KOBELKE
AnswerView source ↗
Again, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition predicated his question on the basis that everything can be fixed overnight when he does not have a clue what he is talking about. Mr Barron-Sullivan: When are you going to make a decision and when are you going to do something? Mr KOBELKE: As I said, I met with the MBA last night. Several members interjected. Mr KOBELKE: Opposition members continue to work on the false basis that noise and criticism amount to something. All they do is make noise, carp and criticise. They have not put up any recommendation that will work. The hallmark of the former Liberal Government was to say there was not a problem with a scheme, such as it did with the finance broking industry. It sat on its hands and let Western Australians suffer. It removed controls on petrol prices in regional WA and watched the differential expand. It was a Government that did absolutely nothing. This Government made decisions on the HIH Insurance collapse and legislation on that matter will come into the Parliament in a matter of weeks. We put in place a rescue package and acted to make sure that people were looked after. On this issue we will similarly make sure that consumers are protected and the building industry is able to function in this State. We will not do that by using a knee-jerk reaction that may be a short-term, stopgap measure that will not fix the problem. That is not to say that we can put in place the best long-term arrangements. There may need to be interim arrangements. If interim arrangements are made, they will not be because of a knee-jerk reaction that does not serve the interests of industry in the longer term.
