TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE
— NORTHERN SUBURBS
752. Ms M.J. HAMMAT to the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the Cook Labor government's
record investment in transport infrastructure across Western Australia.
(1) Can the
minister outline to the house how this government is helping connect people
across our northern suburbs, including to new Metronet precincts?

with that of the previous Liberal–National government?

(1)–(2) I
had an opportunity last Friday to visit a number of the projects we are
delivering across the northern suburbs, whether it be the north-east corridor
or the Yanchep–Joondalup corridor. There is a lot happening. We started
around Bayswater and we have seen the new Bayswater station. We then saw the
Morley–Ellenbrook line and the work that is progressing on new key
stations like the Malaga, Noranda and Morley train stations servicing the
people in that corridor. The Tonkin Gap project will remove the bottleneck
along Tonkin Highway. It will also support connections across the suburbs and
the freight industry. That project is nearing completion and is reducing
congestion and supporting the community throughout the area. I visited Wanneroo
with the member for Wanneroo and examined the completed Mitchell Freeway
extension works. They are the new connections onto Wanneroo Road. The new and
safer intersections will save time for people across the area, whether they
come from Butler, Alkimos or Wanneroo. The new infrastructure will save them a significant
amount of time. Work has been done on the Yanchep rail extension. That is well
underway and will provide people who move into that growing corridor access to world-class infrastructure,
including three new stations along the Yanchep line. We have new rail
links, cyclepaths and other connections across the north-east corridor and the
north-west corridor. That infrastructure has never before been introduced into
the area. Other improvements along the freeway will support cycling
infrastructure and new connections.
This government is delivering on its
commitments. Member for Mirrabooka, I have in my hand a little Metro Area
Express light rail USB. It is a teeny thing, but members might be able to see
it. The previous government made a number of
commitments to the northern suburbs across the north-east corridor, whether it was for the Ellenbrook rail line or MAX light rail. After spending $25 million,
including on advertising materials like this, did it deliver the Ellenbrook
rail line after eight and a half years in government?
Government members : No.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : Did it deliver MAX light rail?
Government members : No.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : It delivered
this little merchandise.
Mr D.A. Templeman : It is a heritage
item. Can I have one?
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : It is a heritage
item. The former government was full of props but did not deliver for the
people living in the northern corridors. Over the next year, members will see
the completion of a wide range of works, whether it be cyclepaths, freeway
improvements, new technology along the freeway or new railway stations. All across the northern suburbs, we will reduce
congestion and improve the lives of people across that entire community.
