AIRLINE FLIGHTS 406. Mr AINSWORTH to the Premier: Is the Premier aware that there are no flights scheduled beyond Friday night and people cannot get bookings? How will that be dealt with? Dr GALLOP

This is a crisis and it is very difficult to manage. It is great to hear from all the experts in the Opposition! Ansett Australia collapsed at 3.00 am and by 12 noon the same day services were back in the air. Over the following few days the Government ensured that there were further services across the State. The Government has been very active on this issue. I would have thought that, in a very difficult situation and with this enormous crisis, the fact that the Government ensured the services were in place - we commend Qantas for what it has done - would be regarded as a breakthrough. I assure the member that these are interim arrangements. They are short-term arrangements and I have always described them as such. They are not perfect or completely adequate. I repeat what I said yesterday: this crisis has been brought upon us by mismanagement of a major company. The public of Australia is getting a bit sick and tired of senior managers in this country paying themselves wage increases and persistently improving their conditions, while others are surrounded by crises. When the members opposite were on this side of the House and there was a crisis in the finance broking industry, they ran away at 100 miles an hour. The Government has responded to failures at the top levels of corporations, both in Western Australia and nationally. I ask all members to compare and contrast the form of inquiry the Opposition set up to deal with the finance brokers scandal with the form of inquiry set up by the Attorney General under the Labor Government. That is the difference between our side of the House and the Opposition’s side of the House. That is the difference in the values. I am not underestimating the extent of the crisis and I am not exaggerating the nature of the services in place; they are short term and interim. We have a lot of work to do before everything is up and running.
