Public housing—Air conditioning
1049. Hon Tim Clifford to
the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister
for Housing and Works:
I refer to point 4.1
in the Housing Authority Rental Policy Manual:
September 2025 , which states:
Tenants living in the North West or
Kalgoorlie and remote areas whose properties are not fitted with Air
Conditioning apertures may make application to have an aperture fitted subject
to budget funding.
I note that Mardie
in the Pilbara has been the hottest place on earth several times over the last few
years.
(1) What does "subject to budget funding"
mean?
(2) In regions and suburbs outside of those
referred to, what is the process for securing air conditioning?
(3) Will the government make air conditioning
mandatory in all public housing as the climate crisis worsens?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question and provide the following on
behalf of the Minister for Housing and Works.
(1)–(3) Tenants whose properties are not
fitted with air conditioning apertures may make an application to have one fitted.
The climate control policy for
public housing is based on Bureau of Meteorology climate zones. The state government
provides cooling in homes through low-cost or no-cost means for tenants,
including ceiling fans, higher ceilings, roof and wall insulation and
appropriate design.
