REY RESOURCES LTD — CANNING BASIN
My question without notice of which some notice has been given is to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Environment. I refer to the recommendation of the Environmental Protection Authority against the approval of the LD Operations coalmine near Margaret River. (1) Will the EPA now recommend against the Rey Resources Ltd Duchess Paradise project in the Canning Basin area of the Kimberley, given that the area is subject to ongoing assessment for heritage listing? (2) If no to (1), why not? (3) If yes to (1), will the minister heed such a recommendation? Hon HELEN MORTON

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question and apologise that there is not a parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Environment! (1)–(3) The Environmental Protection Authority has advised the Minister for Environment that the proponent has not referred its proposal to the authority. The Environmental Protection Authority cannot make a decision to undertake an environmental assessment in accordance with the requirements of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 until the proponent has defined its proposal.
