I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) A specialist mathematics teacher is one who has a degree in mathematics accompanying a postgraduate diploma in education; a teaching degree with a mathematics major; a teaching degree with a mathematics minor able to teach to year 10; or a teacher with at least two years experience in teaching mathematics whom a principal has deemed highly competent to teach in the area. (2) An “experienced” teacher is one who is appropriately qualified to teach a subject area, has gained at least two years of practical experience in a school environment and has demonstrated competency to the principal of the school in which she or he has gained the experience.
