National Climate Risk Assessment report
842. Hon Dr Brian Walker to the Minister for
Agriculture and Food:
I refer the minister to the National
Climate Risk Assessment report released by the federal government last month, particularly those portions of it that deal with the predicted
intensification of drought and aridity in the South West of WA.
(1) What progress has the minister made towards a
review of the Industrial Hemp Act 2004 since speaking favourably on the subject in the chamber 14 months ago?
(2) Does her department's assessment align with my
own that hemp crops will likely become even more valuable to the South West's
agricultural sector as temperatures increase and the grow cycles of more
traditional crops decrease as the result of climate change?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) As advised on 18 June 2025, a review of the
act and regulations will be considered in the context of other government
legislative priorities.
(2) Industrial hemp is a versatile crop that has
been grown in the South West commercially and for research purposes, including
at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development's Manjimup research
station as part of AgriFutures Australia's industrial hemp variety trials.
These WA government–supported research trials provide current and
future hemp growers with important data on suitable varieties, sowing times,
germination rates and other information to improve productivity. The decision,
however, to grow hemp in place of other crops is a commercial decision for
individual farm businesses.
