(1) The Department for Child Protection funds the Anglicare Kinway Family Counselling Service in Kununurra and the Anglicare Indigenous Child Sexual Abuse Response Service in Derby. In addition, visiting Departmental clinical social workers and psychologists have been providing counselling as part of the response to recent allegations in Halls Creek and Kalumburu. Department child protection workers serving these communities can and do provide counselling for families that is less intensive than individual and clinical counselling.
(2) The Department for Child Protection does not provide counselling services specifically for those charged with child abuse.
(3) The Department for Child Protection has Community Child Protection Worker positions in several Kimberley communities including Halls Creek, Derby and Kalumburu. These workers undertake community capacity building activities, including community education and awareness, to enhance the protection of children. Department officers, police and teachers in the region also provide protective behaviour presentations for children through local schools.
(4) In 2007-08 the Department for Child Protection currently provides funding for a range of non government services in Derby, Halls Creek and Kununurra, some of which exclusively provide counselling services, and some of which provide some counselling in the context of domestic and family violence services. These include:
- $90,000 per annum for the Anglicare Indigenous Child Sexual Abuse Response Service in Derby
- $105,515 per annum for the Anglicare Kinway Family Counselling Service in Kununurra.
- Marnin Bowa Dumbara Aboriginal Corporation Derby Family Healing Centre Women's Refuge receives $474,980 per annum through the joint Commonwealth/State Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP)
- Marnin Bowa Dumbara Aboriginal Corporation Family and Domestic Violence Support and Outreach Service $117,876 per annum
- Gawooleng Yawoodeng Aboriginal Corporation - Kununurra Crisis Accommodation Centre Women's Refuge $472,452 per annum through the joint Commonwealth/State Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP)
- Ngaringga Ngurra Aboriginal Corporation - Halls Creek Safe House Women's Refuge $373 636 per annum through the joint Commonwealth/State Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP)
