Owing to the anxiety currently being experienced by fishermen who have been in the industry a long time and who intend to leave in the next few years, what is the Government’s intention regarding tenure on shacks on the coastline between Dumper Bay and Cliff Head? Hon G.T. GIFFARD

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Department of Land Administration’s policy covering professional fisher shack tenure along the central cost of Western Australia was developed in recognition of the economic benefit to the State generated by professional fishermen situated along the central coast, including those located between Dumper Bay and Cliff Head. Following the removal of recreational squatters’ shacks along the coast, the professional fishermen have been permitted to remain under the transitional lease arrangements until such time as suitable development nodes are established in the vicinity. The fishermen will then be required to relocate to identified leasehold sites within the development nodes.
