The Department of Housing advises:
(a) Other than unlettable homes currently undergoing significant maintenance, modification or refurbishment, as at 30 September 2010, the Department has 520 vacant properties. (Please note that figures are collated for the end of each month, hence figures are as at 30 September 2010).
(b) As at 30 September 2010, 0.15% of all 36,132 social houses in Western Australia are currently vacant and available for allocation. These are usually allocated within a few weeks as there is an inevitable time taken for people to move into a home after they are notified.
A further 0.1% of social houses in Western Australia are vacant after being allocated to the community housing sector.
A further 1.2% of social houses were vacant undergoing refurbishment, which will result in a good outcome for the new tenants who will occupy those homes once works are complete
The number of vacancies per region vary from week to week due to local circumstances on the ground. Every effort is made by the Department of Housing to allocate those homes to people on the waiting list, although those offers sometimes take a period before they translate to an acceptance and tenancy.
It is noted that Western Australia will deliver about 1000 new social housing units (an increase of about 3%) in the last three months of 2010.
(c)-(e)At any time, a number of the 36,137 public housing properties will be vacant for a variety of reasons. These include refurbishment at the end of a tenancy to maintain the standard of the property, reallocation to clients between tenancies and also the reallocation to the management of a community housing organisation.
