Federal budget—Tax changes
341. Mr Shane Love to
the Minister for Mines and Petroleum:
I refer to the
federal Labor government's broken promises on capital gains tax and reports
from industry groups such as the Association of Mining and Exploration
Companies and the Minerals Council of Australia warning that there will be a
big hit to junior mining explorers and their ability to raise funds for
much-needed mineral explanation.
(1) Has the minister spoken with these
industry leaders about the damaging impact of these new taxes?
(2) Does the minister agree with these
industry groups that these same taxes will be a big hit to mining explorers?

(1)–(2) I thank the member for the question.
Exploration is the lifeblood of the mining industry. We know that in Western
Australia. That is why we had an election commitment to increase the
Exploration Incentive Scheme. We are the only party that committed to that at
the election to look after the exploration sector. That is what we have done
and that is what we have funded in our budgets—to do that co-drilling around
the state for the exploration sector. We are well aware of the concerns of
AMEC, the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia and others in the
exploration sector in WA. As the Premier said, we talk to the Commonwealth all
the time, advocating for our industries and our state, and always putting WA
first.
