I refer Mining Lease 26/383 owned by Barrick Gold and Newmont Mining Limited, operated by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Pty Ltd, the Fimiston I tailings dam and documents dated August 1988 titled ‘Notice of Intent and works approval for Fimiston leases expansion project, North Kalgurli Mine prepared by Australian Groundwater Consultants Pty Ltd’, a paper titled ‘Understanding Best Practice tailings management written by Peter Waggit, Principal Environmental Scientist, Office of the Supervising Scientist - Environment Australia’ -
(1) Given that condition number 11 on Mining Lease 26/383 in part states ‘The Construction and operation of the Project and measures to protect the environment being carried out generally in accordance with the proposals outlined in the following documents …’, will the Minister urgently table a copy of the following documents prior to or just after the release of the review by Thompson and Brett concerning the Fimiston I tailings dam -
(a) Notice of Intent for an extension to the tailings storage at North Kalgoorlie Mines dated September 1987, letter dated May 3 1991, and retained on mines file No. 1198/91;
(b) letter from North Kalgurli Mines Limited dated April 11 1998, and filed at pages 162 and 163 of mines file No. 17221/83, in particular points 2(a), (b) and 2(c); and
(c) Mt Percy Tailings Storage Extension works approval documentation dated November 1988 from Australian Groundwater Consultants?
(2) If no to (1), why not?
(3) Does the Minister or the Department have a copy of the paper titled ‘Understanding Best Practice tailings management written by Peter Waggit, Principal Environmental Scientist, Office of the Supervising Scientist - Environment Australia’?
(4) If no to (3), will the Minister obtain a copy?
