LA
TROBE UNIVERSITY — CANNABIS CROP YIELDS
1564. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the Minister for Agriculture and
Food:
I
refer the minister to the recent announcement of a $5 million federal grant for
a project at La Trobe University in Melbourne aimed at utilising
state-of-the-art technology to improve medicinal cannabis crop yields and
sustainability.
(1) Will the
minister join me in congratulating La Trobe on successfully securing this
funding, and in leading the way in research that has the potential to optimise
Australia's plant-based medical industry?
(2) Will the Cook
government acknowledge, given that it is now legal in Victoria to drive with
THC in one's system, as it is in Tasmania, that this funding going east
is just one more indication that WA is falling behind its neighbouring
jurisdictions when it comes to securing a fair go for medicinal cannabis
patients and growers alike?

however, take the opportunity to congratulate the University of Western Australia,
which was a successful recipient of funding under the current round of the
regional research collaboration program as announced by the federal Minister
for Industry and Science, Hon Ed Husic, on 22 October 2024.
(2) The Western Australian
government has established the medicinal cannabis and safe driving working
group to examine issues regarding medicinal cannabis and safe driving.
