I refer to the study carried out in the late 1990s by Professor Fiona Stanley into the health of Aboriginal children in three remote communities before and after the installation of swimming pools, a study that indicated a major improvement in the health and social wellbeing of the whole community. Is the minister aware whether those improvements have been sustained; and, if so, will the government support the construction of further pools in remote Aboriginal communities? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. The Child Health Research Institute is continuing its evaluation of the health impact of the swimming pools in remote Aboriginal communities. This further research will indicate whether the initial health improvements have been sustained. The government is open to considering this and other options that achieve sustained health improvements among Aboriginal people in remote communities.
