DEPARTMENT OF FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES —
BURNING PERMITS
1547. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the Minister for Emergency Services:
I refer to advice by the Department
of Fire and Emergency Services to register burns with the department prior to
lighting to prevent unnecessary emergency responses.
(1) Why is DFES
registering burns and advising of such burns on EmergencyWA when a local
government has entered the prohibited burning period for the given location?
(2) Why is DFES
registering burns and advising of such burns on EmergencyWA when the fire
danger is high or above for the given location?
(3) Can the
minister assure the Council that an appropriate response occurs even if unlawful
burns are registered with DFES and placed on EmergencyWA?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services
advises the following.
(1) DFES
registers burns on EmergencyWA for public awareness. Permits to burn are issued
by local governments and the conditions of these permits are determined in
accordance with the provisions of the Bush Fires Act 1954 and Bush Fires
Regulations 1954.
(2) A permit to
burn may still be used when the fire danger rating is high if it is authorised
by a fire weather officer delegated by the local government.
(3) DFES always
has public safety at the forefront of every emergency service response
situation or incident that it attends.
