NICKEL INDUSTRY
70. Mr R.S. LOVE to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. I go
back to the question. Did the Premier implore the Prime Minister to consider
that tax credit: yes or no?

I asked the Prime Minister to assist
the nickel industry in the same way that we and the federal government already
have. The government needs to continue to examine and work with industry on all
aspects of what might be necessary for it to have confidence about the future.
We know that critical minerals are going to play an important part in the
diversification and decarbonisation of the economy. That is the reason that the
Minister for Mines and Petroleum has already taken significant steps to support
nickel miners who are struggling at the moment. We have had very good feedback
from some miners that that is exactly what they needed. We have had really good
feedback that the federal government's decision to include nickel on
the critical minerals list, so that miners can have access to multiple billions
of dollars in further assistance, was also a very welcome measure. It may be
that there are other measures. I think the Prime Minister is very wise not to
rule in or out production tax credits because we need to be flexible and
continue to make sure that we do what is necessary to continue to support the
industry.
