PUBLIC
TRANSPORT — FARES
803. Hon KEN TRAVERS to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Transport:
I originally submitted this question
to the representative of the Treasurer, but despite making comments on radio
this morning, he does not seem to want to answer the question, so it has now
been directed to the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for
Transport.
(1) Can the
minister confirm that the 2012–13 budget paper No 3 announced a 10c
increase in the Public Transport Authority's standard two-zone fare
from 1 July 2012?
(2) Can the minister confirm that
the standard two-zone fare increased by 20c on 1 July 2012?
(3) Can the
minister confirm that the additional 10c increase was due to the introduction
of the carbon tax?
(4) Can the
minister explain why the government is not reducing the standard two-zone fare
by 10c now that the carbon tax has been removed?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question.
(1)–(3)
The Transperth 2012–13 fares were increased by the projected inflation
rate of 2.8 per cent and an additional 1.5 per cent to recover the estimated
cost of the carbon tax, which is a total of 4.3 per cent, rounded to the
nearest 10c. This led to a standard two-zone fare increasing by 20c from $3.80
to $4 on 1 July 2012.
(4) The
government is currently working with the Public Transport Authority to
determine forecast operational savings as a result of the removal of the carbon
tax to determine the appropriate quantum to be passed through to public
transport users through a reduction in fare prices. The value of any fare
reduction will be applied as a percentage decrease in line with normal fare
adjustments and be rounded to the nearest 10c.
