I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) (a) 114; and (b) 81. (2) (a) 93; and (b) 57. The department currently gives priority to processing applications from teachers suitably qualified and available to teach in subject areas and locations of need. All other applications are processed as quickly as possible in the order in which the completed applications are received. At the same time, the demand for priority processing has escalated. The Department of Education and Training has brought in on a contract basis an additional officer with experience in assessing teacher qualifications to assist with this situation, which should be ameliorated shortly. Western Australian College of Training registration requires a criminal history record check, and Department of Education and Training processes include checking the class of registration and any consequent employment restrictions; the specific nature of qualifications, including subject and sector specialisations; visa information, where appropriate; and the national check of employment status, which provides historical information on performance issues, disciplinary action, dismissals etc. These are time-consuming but necessary tasks to ensure quality assurance and risk reduction for students, schools and the department as an employer.
