Hon Maryka Groenewald inquired about the implementation status of the Ombudsman's 2020 recommendations on preventing youth suicide and whether the government would request a follow-up report. The Minister for Mental Health stated two recommendations are complete, four are in progress, and one is being reported on separately, while declining to direct the independent Ombudsman.

Youth suicide
464. Hon Maryka Groenewald to the parliamentary
secretary representing the Minister for Mental Health:
I refer to the seven
recommendations made in the Ombudsman's report Preventing
suicide by children and young people 2020 .
(1) Since the Ombudsman's last report on
the steps taken to implement those recommendations in 2021, how many of the
recommendations have been fully implemented?
(2) Will the government commit to asking
the Ombudsman to release another report on the steps taken to give effect to
the recommendations within the next year?
(3) If not, why not?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question. The following answer has
been provided by the Minister for Mental Health.
(1) Two are complete and four are at
various stages of implementation. One is being reported on separately to the
Ombudsman by the Department of Communities.
(2)–(3) The Ombudsman is independent and operates
free from government direction.
