state BUDGET GRANTS — EXPENDITURE REDUCTIONS
My first question was submitted before the house rose for the winter recess. It was directed at the Leader of the House representing the Treasurer, but it might be in a different file by now. It was about budget paper No 3, pages 83 to 85. Hon Norman Moore : I do not have it. Hon SUE ELLERY : I will move on. Perhaps I could ask the Leader of the House to investigate during question time where that question might have gone. Hon Norman Moore : I am sitting here listening to the answers and waiting for the questions to be asked. The PRESIDENT : Perhaps if the Leader of the Opposition asks the question, either the Leader of the House or the parliamentary secretary responsible for it might be able to answer it now or at the end of question time. Hon SUE ELLERY : Thank you. I refer to pages 83 to 85 of budget paper No 3 of the 2009-10 state budget and the government’s decision to reduce expenditure on grants by $200 million over four years, commencing with a $65 million reduction in the 2009-10 financial year. (1) Which grants programs, by agency, are to be examined to determine whether they will be subject to a reduction? (2) Have any of the scheduled processes for advertising or the seeking of applications for grants been deferred while awaiting the outcome of the implementation of the cuts to be achieved in 2009-10? (3) If so, which ones? Hon HELEN MORTON

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question. (1) A targeted approach is proposed to implement the reduction in grants expenditure, focusing on the larger grant-providing agencies, those that are duplicated across agencies and those where the intended outcomes are no longer consistent with the government’s priorities or are not effective in meeting their intended outcomes. (2) No. (3) Not applicable.
