WILDLIFE — BANNED CHEMICALS
1472. Hon SOPHIA MOERMOND to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Minister for Environment:
I refer to news that trace amounts
of banned chemicals dieldrin and DDE were found in magpies by the NSW
Environment Protection Authority.
(1) Is the department aware of any
recent use of the banned chemicals?
(2) Have any
trace amounts of the chemicals been found in Western Australian wildlife?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. On behalf of the Minister for Environment, I provide
the following answer.
(1) The
Department of Water and Environmental Regulation is not aware of the news that
trace amounts of banned chemicals dieldrin
and DDE were found in magpies by the NSW Environment Protection Authority.
(2) The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and
Attractions does not undertake routine surveillance of banned chemicals
in wildlife and is not aware of any positive results for banned chemicals in
recent wildlife deaths.
