The Premier, through Hon N.F. Moore, doesn't explicitly support the proposed reconciliation walk on December 3, 2000, suggesting it should be linked to a more significant event like NAIDOC celebrations to avoid being perceived as an afterthought.

Does the Premier support the proposal for a reconciliation walk to be held in Perth on 3 December 2000? Hon N.F. MOORE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. In Western Australia a number of steps have been taken to promote reconciliation. Our Parliament was one of the first in Australia to apologise as a result of the report into the stolen generation. The Premier represented the State at Corroboree 2000 and thousands of Western Australians participated in a ceremony of commitment to reconciliation in Forrest Place in May. The Premier has publicly stated that he feels that if we were to have a bridge walk it would be more significant if it were linked to a particular event rather than risk it being seen as an afterthought or simply being staged to bring Western Australia into line with what has happened in other States. For example, it might be seen as a good lead in to the next NAIDOC celebrations.
