The Department of Health Advises:
(1) There were 676 mental health patients presenting to Busselton Health Campus Emergency Department in 2016 and 399 patients in 2017.
(2) There were 68 mental health patients transferred from Busselton Health Campus Emergency Department to Bunbury Regional Hospital in 2016, and 52 patients in 2017.
(3) 5.4 Full Time Equivalent trained mental health nurses are employed to work at Busselton Health Campus.
(4) Any patient who presents to Busselton Health Campus will be triaged, assessed and appropriate interventions organised. Emergency departments across Western Australia provide emergency and urgent care 24 hours a day, seven days per week.
The emergency department clinicians can access Rural Link 24/7 for specialised mental health telephone advice and/or liaise with the regional mental health service. Similarly, consumers with mental health disorders and their carers can also access Rural Link for advice and support as required.
If a referral is required, it will be to the most appropriate agency. Referral options vary dependent on the assessment of need of the consumer. There are public or private options, such as a general practitioner, private providers or not for profit agencies, like Headspace.
Generally, a consumer will be referred to the Community Mental Health team in Busselton in the first instance if appropriate, or sent for assessment by a Psychiatrist in Bunbury Hospital.
