SOUTH WEST RAILWAY 462. Mr TEMPLEMAN to the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure: The member for Carine has expressed concerns about the impact of the south western metropolitan railway’s new and much faster route from Mandurah along the Kwinana Freeway. Her concerns were not only about its appearance. She also made an unusual quote on television about the new rail system causing pollution, with both rail and motorists along the freeway. What is the extent of the pollution to which the member for Carine is referring? Ms MacTIERNAN
AnswerView source ↗
I understand that the member for Mandurah and his constituents are very much in favour of the much faster and more logical route along the freeway. Many people will have heard of the proposed orange route for the heavy haulage traffic through the Darling scarp. I understand people in Mandurah and Rockingham now refer to the Kenwick route as the lemon route, because it was a lemon. The constituents of the member for Carine enjoy an excellent, direct rail service to the city. It was another great Labor initiative. The member for Carine has been very supportive of the ongoing expansion and extension of the northern suburbs route. I hoped that she would extend the same courtesy to the people of Rockingham and Mandurah. The video that we released at the weekend showed that the rail link would not be a source of visual pollution; indeed, it displayed a most attractive substitution for cars. Mr Board: Attractive? Ms MacTIERNAN: Absolutely. I understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Air pollution may have been the concern of the member for Carine. Some 17 000 people a day will travel on the new rail system. That will see an enormous reduction in air pollution. It is clear that the system devised by the Government will result in up to 5 000 more people leaving their cars at home - leaving that pollution at home - and taking our modern direct rail system.
